What Grain Broadhead Should I Use?

Find out what grain broadhead is best for you. Learn the different styles, weights, and hunting types to use!

When it comes to choosing a broadhead, the options can be overwhelming. Don't worry, Vantage Point Archery is here to help! In this article, we'll discuss the different types of broadheads available and what grain weight is best for each.

There are three main types of broadheads: Fixed blade mechanical hybrid broadheads.

While mechanical broadheads are a popular style of broadhead and are often known for being as accurate as field points, they are less reliable than fixed-blade broadheads.

Fixed blade broadheads are the simplest and most reliable broadheads. VPA Broadheads are rock solid and machined with precision to give you perfect flight every time. No weld lines or brazing give the broadhead “bone-splitting” strength.

How is Broadhead strength measured?

One way broadhead strength is measured is in grains. The higher the grain number, the heavier and more powerful the broadhead. Heavier broadheads are typically associated with being better for big game animals like elk and moose while lighter broadheads are better for smaller game animals like whitetail deer, varmints, etc.

However, there has been a recent movement to use heavier broadheads to have more FOC. When it comes to choosing a grain weight, the general rule of thumb is that the heavier the broadhead, the more kinetic energy it will transfer to the animal. This can be beneficial for taking down larger game animals.

Blade Sharpness and Types

Another factor to consider when choosing a broadhead is blade sharpness and type.

There are two main types of blades:

● conventional

● serrated

VPA manufactures conventional blades, which are your traditional, straight-edged blades. When it comes to blade sharpness, you'll want to choose a razor-sharp broadhead. This will ensure a clean, quick kill. VPA broadheads come out of the package “field sharpened”, we recommend you put a final sharpening on them before hunting. VPA uses high-quality steel that can achieve razor-blade sharpness and maintains that edge. VPA broadheads can be shot through an animal, quickly resharpened, and then are ready to go back in your quiver for your next hunt.

Broadhead cutting diameter is another important factor to consider. Cutting diameter is the width of the wound channel that the broadhead will create. A wider wound channel means more tissue damage, which can lead to a quicker kill.

It's important to choose a broadhead with a cutting diameter that is appropriate for the game you are hunting. The cutting diameters that VPA manufacturers are 1-1/8", 1-1/4", and 1-1/2". The 1-1/8" size is typically acceptable for most game, especially North American game. The 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" sizes are better for creating wider wound channels for larger animals.

If you're hunting small game, such as rabbits or squirrels, you'll want to use VPA Small Game Thumpers. VPA designed the “Small Game Thumper” (SGT) to be the best small game and stump shooting head ever! The SGT is precision machined from High Carbon Steel, heat treated for durability and sports a durable black oxide finish. Sharp machined cutting edges, combined with a hard-hitting hollow point nose is devastating on small game.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a broadhead, but by taking the time to choose the right one, you can ensure a successful hunt. If are unsure about your broadhead selection either for hunting small game or for larger game, the knowledgeable staff at Vantage Point Archery can help you make the best decision for your needs.
